Facing Control Issues, Embracing Compassion & Crushing Co-Parenting with Andie Torres

In this episode I had the pleasure of sitting down with my friend and colleague, Andie Torres. If you don’t already know her, Andie is a fellow special needs mom, a talented graphic designer, and a writer with a heart for supporting moms like us. We dove into some big topics in this episode—ones that I know so many of you can relate to.

First, we talked about the need for control. If you’re like me, you probably feel that pull to control every detail when it comes to your child’s care. Andie and I opened up about how that control, while understandable, isn’t always helpful for our well-being. Letting go of control can feel impossible, but it’s a conversation we need to have because it impacts our mental and emotional health in big ways.

Andie, who is also a single mom, shared her insights on relationships—especially the dynamics of co-parenting. But what we discussed applies to any relationship, whether it’s with your partner, school staff, or medical professionals. We explored how to navigate these crucial relationships with care and intention, especially as we enter a new school season.

One of the more eye-opening parts of our conversation was about advocacy—something all of us special needs moms are deeply familiar with. Andie shared how she had to push relentlessly for her son’s medical care, even when doctors weren’t taking her seriously. Her persistence quite literally saved her son’s life. It’s a powerful reminder to trust our instincts as moms, even when the “experts” doubt us.

This episode is full of raw, real-life experiences that I think you’ll find comforting and relatable. If you’ve ever felt overwhelmed by the constant need to advocate for your child, or if you’re navigating tricky relationships in your life, this is a must-listen.

Tune in for a conversation that will remind you that you’re not alone on this journey, and that no matter how challenging it gets, there’s hope, support, and community waiting for you. And trust me, you’ll love getting to know Andie just as much as I have!
