Ever walked into a support group expecting encouragement and connection, only to leave feeling worse than when you arrived? I know I have. There’s nothing quite as frustrating as seeking support, only to end up feeling unheard, overwhelmed, or just… out of place.
This week on the podcast, I’m talking about unsupportive support groups—why some just don’t work and how to actually find (or create) the support you need. Because let’s be real, not all spaces are the right fit, and sometimes what we’re looking for just… doesn’t exist yet. (Which might mean we have to create it. I know, I know—just what you needed, another thing on your plate.)
In the episode, I share my own less-than-great support group experience, why mismatched expectations can make a space feel off, and the types of people you might run into (looking at you, fixers and loud talkers). If you’ve ever left a support group thinking, Well, that was… not it, this episode is for you.
But don’t worry, it’s not just a gripe session—I also talk about what does make a support group truly work, how to find a space that actually supports you, and what to do if the support you need doesn’t seem to exist. (Hint: You might have to be the one to build it, but we’ll get to that.)
