I am so excited to have Casey Waugh on the podcast today. She’s an Occupational Therapist and known in my special needs mom circle for her inspiring reel from a couple months ago. It has made so many of us feel seen and recognized during these hardships we endure with our children.
Casey has been a foster mom to a special needs child and grew up with a special needs brother. We discuss the details and often complications with IEP meetings. She shares how she uses these experiences along with her professional experiences as an OT to connect with parents and be a better partner to parents in these circumstances.
We talk about play and parents. I wanted Casey’s advice how to better connect and sustain imaginative play. She says even 10 minutes of quality time on the floor is more worthwhile than an extended time that isn’t actually connected.
Casey wants to tell parents they are the biggest advocates for their children. And even when it’s hard to speak up in a meeting, your voice is essentially your child’s voice. It will help them be their own advocates in the future.
Who is Casey: Casey Waugh is a pediatric occupational therapist from Pittsburgh with 9 years of experience helping parents support their kids through daily life. Casey’s passion is to elevate parent confidence through education and community – because every parent and every child deserves a safe place to belong. Casey graduated from Duquesne University with a Master’s of Science in Occupational Therapy and a minor in Special Education. She has worked in outpatient therapy, inpatient rehabilitation, early intervention, and specialized school settings and has focused on developing skills and certifications in sensory processing and feeding treatment.
